Saturday, Feb. 2 Come Sit at My Table, Unless You're Creepy

Any of you live in the San Francisco Bay Area? Wanna come hang out? I'll be speaking at my home church's "Coffee Talk" event. I will not be break dancing (unless you chant for it and then maybe), but I will be sharing from God's word and my own messy life. You're gonna here about loving God and loving others and how it ain't easy. Because love is a choice and it is lived out in action. Not emotion. Not empty words. God calls us to get out there and love when we don't feel like it, when it's inconvenient, when it is a sacrifice, when it's messy, when it's uncomfortable. And that's pretty much my whole talk so you don't even need to come now. Unless you want to see me break dance (for a solid chant), see ugly pictures of me, hear me make fun of facebook, and hear some incredible stories of God's faithfulness and blessing when we step out in faith. Let me know you are coming and I'll save you a seat at my table.

Road Trippin' With My 3-year-old, Part 2

Pin It Now! This is part 2 of my story about my adventures on the road with my three-year-old, Jordis. Read Part 1 here. Over 1000 miles covered. Spoke at 3 churches and visited 3 Coffee Beans. Including one in Long Beach. And that's where we pick up on our story . . .

On our way to Orange County we made a pit-and-play stop in Long Beach so we could visit some more friends. People, when did Long Beach get so awesome? The downtown area is so cute and they have a Coffee Bean.

We had lunch and played in the park with my UCLA friend Kelly and her adorable twin girls. We also lunched and played with my acting days friend (and UCLA!) Christina and her little boy. You might recognize Christina from Cloak and Dagger or Out of this World because . . . well, she was on them.

After our play time we headed to Laguna where we stayed with my friend Kerry who was an accomplice on the Kirk Cameron stalking story. We have been friends since we were about 10 years old and I am sad to report I didn't take any pictures with her.

I spoke at Crossline Community Church's MOPS group and no one threw eggs at me. Probably because they all thought I was a long lost sister of their coordinator. She's my new friend and we have a lot in common including mad crafting skills.

Then I went off to meet my virtual friends. But I don't want to overwhelm you since I probably just exceeded your attention span of 140 characters. Part 3 to come. Dang, is this like the Hunger Games or what?

Road Trippin' with My 3-year-old, Part 1

A few years ago Lydia and I went on an 8-day trip to Southern California. We stayed at my different houses, visited many friends, I spoke at several churches, and we went to Disneyland.

This time it was Jordis's turn to be my roadie.

We traveled over 1000 miles in my dirty minivan over 7 days.

We stayed at four different houses and shared a room and/or bed. Loved it.

I visited with as many friends as we could fit in.

I spoke at three different churches in Orange County.

We spent a day at Disneyland and California adventure.

I had an ice blended mocha from The Coffee Bean three times.

It was awesome and memorable.

Next up? Elijah. Not sure when or where but he is ready and waiting.

We left a day early and took 101 instead of 5 because of wind, rain, and snow. With 5 hours noticed I called my Aunt and Uncle in Arroyo Grande and off we went.

I jogged around their driveway and Jordis, Uncle Mike, and Stella the dog paced me in the golf cart. They could hardly keep up with my 11-12 minute miles.

My Aunt Leslie should change her name to Pinterest. If she was on it or even knew what it was she would totally dominate you. You would want to pin her face off.

Chicken in a basket. Just basic stuff.

They have an incredible yard. If you remember anything in the world, you might remember their garden.

And it wouldn't be a trip to AG with out a stop at The Bean. Ice Blended Mocha heaven.

Then we visited my old school friend Brooke and her family.

We stayed with Carol-Ann and her crew and then headed for the OC. Stay tuned . . . because this short series could knock your socks off. Or bore you to death. Better come back to find out.

Calling All Washington Friends

Pin It Now! I just returned from my So Cal road trip with my three-year-old roadie, Jordis. Will post about that later in the week, but for now . . . preparing for my trip to Washington next month!

My March Madness - Speaking

I just wrapped up team teaching and leading the women's Bible study at my church on Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline. And so now my speaking stuff is off and running. And driving. And flying. It's my March Madness.

Here's a clip from my talk on the "Simplicity" from the Celebration of Discipline study. I'm sharing a recent personal story of how God showed up in an amazing way in the midst of our financial struggle. If you want some spiritual encouragement . . .

This morning and next Thursday I will be speaking on a panel about Motherhood perspective for MOPS at Cornerstone Fellowship in Livermore, CA. My perspective: Motherhood is awesome. And hard. Keep it Real. There are some wiser moms on the panel so don't you worry.

This Friday, March 2nd I will be doing a workshop at the BASS convention in Castro Valley, CA. My workshop is "Overwhelmed and Overscheduled: Learning to Say No, Especially in Ministry." And of course, I have been aggressively been tested in this area over the last few months as I have prepared this workshop. I've had to use my no muscle a lot even though you might not think so based on my March Madness speaking. But some of you have even victims of my no so you can testify for me in the "No" court. Hope to see some of you at BASS (Bay Area Sunday School Convention). But feel free to say "No!" to that.

Then heading to Orange County in a few weeks to speak to three different Mom groups with this precious and unpredictable three-year-old! Start praying for me now :)

Women's Retreat in So Cal

Pin It Now! If you are planning on attending the women's retreat (open to all women - not just moms, not just Fallbrookians) "The Unexpected Life" in Fallbrook on Oct. 7-8th make sure you get your tickets ASAP or at lease email and/or call to let them know you are coming. They are trying to get a head count for food and streamers and what not. Many have expressed interest, but not many have actually gotten tickets so they are trying to figure stuff out.

The Unexpected Life

Pin It Now! If you live in Southern California then you really should check out North County San Diego. Specifically, you should check out my husband's hometown of Fallbrook. And do it on Friday Oct. 7th and Saturday October 8th when I will be talking about "The Unexpected Life" at a women's retreat. No campgrounds, no hotels (unless you get one), no obstacle courses, and no icebreakers . . . that I know of.

A Rockin' Conference

This year's Design 4 Living Conference was awesome.

Francesca Battistelli's voice is unbelievable. Pure, effortless, unique, strong, beautiful.

Lisa Harper. I love her. What a powerful, funny, deep, hilarious, sassy communicator.

Debbie Alsdorf. Heartfelt and challenging as usual. She started the Design 4 Living Conference seven years ago!

Potter's Field Ministry. Wow. I would have been impressed if Mike the potter, whipped up an ash tray. But alas, he made some serious pottery. He and his wife shared a powerful testimony and mad artistic skills.

Justin Brier and the Design 4 Living Worship Team were awesome. And they got to come on to stage amidst confetti shooting out of cannons. For real. Cornerstone Fellowship is hardcore like that.

I had the privilege of Emceeing the whole thing. Got to intro Francesca and Potter's Field. Got to harass and make fun of Lisa Harper and her made-up words and Tennessee accent. And I got to give away a Kindle so at least one person there really, really liked me.

Got to make a complete fool of myself by dancing through the decades. Breakdancing and all. Not kidding . . . will post the video of that tomorrow. For now, here are some action shots.

God has really been speaking to me lately about his specific love for individuals and how He comes near to us. Heard that again at the conference.

Think about that:

God loves you. Specifically. Not just as a face in the crowd. But you as an individual. He cares about what is going on in your world.

Design 4 Living 2011

Pin It Now! Last year I did a breakout session for the Design 4 Living Conference.

(Me and Debbie Alsdorf. She is the founder of Design 4 Living and my major supporter, and my unofficial agent/publicist with all my book and speaking stuff. She heard me speak at MOPS a few years ago and afterwards told me I had to write a book about it and had to call it Totally Desperate Mom.)

This year I will be emceeing the conference. I have the pleasure of introducing Francesca Battistelli (who just won three Dove awards!) and Michael and Pam Rozell of Potter's Field Ministries. Francesca will be doing a concert Friday night and Lisa Harper is the keynote speaker. Shaping up to be an awesome conference. If you live in Northern California I suggest you cancel your sewing class and get yourself to the conference. It's Friday night May 20th and Saturday May 21st.

When Your Husband Calls You Fat

Pin It Now! Has your husband or boyfriend ever stuck his foot or perhaps his whole leg in his mouth? How about on a special date or 10-year anniversary trip? When you were pregnant?
Yeah, mine too.

This is the intro story I told to my talk about living in process and not perfection when I spoke at a women's event last August.

Something's Gotta Give

I keep adding things to my life - like writing a book, selling/shipping my book, hosting a college small group at our house, and a crazy fall speaking schedule. That is in addition to my main job -- wifehood and motherhood. The weird thing is that no one is adding hours to my day. So something's gotta get neglected. It will be my blog. And probably some housework, too. So if you don't see me going postal here as frequently at Tales from the Motherhood in the next few months . . . I am trying to keep from actually going postal. The Father's House

Pin It Now! Wanted to let you know that I will be speaking at The Father's House in Vacaville for their women's event on Friday, August 27th at 7pm. For those of you who live around there -- I would love to see you. Especially if you were to come dressed in a prom dress or something cool like that. From personal knowledge and experience I'm able to relate to the stories in this book, and especially to my own daughter, the author. Although the book isn't written for men, I think many husbands would gain an even greater respect and admiration for their parenting wives by reading this book. I appreciate my own wife's parenting skills much more now than I did before reading Wendy's book.

I'm blessed to be to be a part of this family, and to be a Grandpa who can enjoy the company of Wendy's kids without having the full-time responsibility of a Totally Desperate Mom.

My Speaking/Book World Tour

Sike! "Made you look now you're in a baby book!" (That's what Elijah brought home from school.) There will be no world tour because I still have (and want) my day job. The motherhood.

I am lining up my small Southern California speaking/book tour for the fall. A week in Orange County in October and a week in the L.A. area in November. I am close to getting all my dates and churches finalized and will post those times and places soon. So if you live in Southern California maybe you can come harass me or bring me flowers or be my back-up dancer.

Design 4 Living 2010 Review

I had a great time at the Design 4 Living Conference!

Friday night before the conference started we had a beautiful and delicious speaker dinner. It is so cool that other people have the gift of making things look pretty. Check out our table setting.

Friday night Elisa Morgan (former president of MOPS) brought it with her message regarding Mary of Bethany - "She did what she could." And I'm not just saying that because we are about the same height (she was wearing heels).

Comedian Kerri Pomarolli was absolutely hilarious. She had us all cracking up! And I'm not saying that because we are about the same height.

Debbie Alsdorf and her team put on a great conference. I think there were about 1000 women who attended.

And Debbie (who encouraged me to write my book) is also my psuedo fan club president, literary agent, and publicist. Thanks Debbie!

And to top things off my friend Kathy, served as my "shadow." Apparently when you speak at a conference you have to have someone follow you around to make sure you have everything you need -- like chocolate, special water, Scooby snacks, and stuff like that. I made Kathy call me J-Lo and she didn't even mind.

The worship band was awesome! These two beauties are my babysitters!

When I get a copy of it, I'll post my talk about Life in the Motherood and how to take care of Mom in the midst of it. In the meantime, if you want some motherhood encouragement, you can listen to my MOPS talk "You were made for this." It's up at the right hand side of my blog.
